Broke after 6-months

I would have given the machine 5-stars until it broke. The machine is leaking water from the base after only 6-months of use. It works if you fill the machine with water and immediately start to brew, but if you leave water in the machine - say you prepare it at night and set the timer for the coffee to be ready in the morning - you wake up to a counter covered in water because of the leak. Thought it was a great machine up until this happened. Looks well made, but it's obviously not.

Simple to use, reliable and the coffee tastes great

I first tried out the Breville Precision brewer and returned it as I found it to be way too complicated and with finicky sensors that misread the water tank as empty when it wasn't. I then tried the Moccamaster and found the brewing process to be clunky and the taste not to my tase. The OXO Barista Brain 9-cup was my next choice and I found this to be simple to use, reliable and the coffee tastes great! Some of the other reviews mention a rubber smell - I haven't had any issues with that at all.

Worthy Upgrade

This machine brews a fantastic cup. It is easy to operate and limited options which is nice. I upgraded from a cheap/budget friendly coffee maker. There is a world of difference between $40 and $200+ makers.

Fast service, great coffee!

I purchased this coffee maker after viewing many videos, reviews and comparisons. I chose an OPEN BOX as original boxed not available. Love the machine and the easily made morning coffee. I listened to comments from users who wanted the carafe to be hotter. I program and set up coffee maker to “pour through” water only about an hour before I awaken. This accomplishes three things; carafe pre-heated, I use the discarded hot water to also pre heat my coffee mug, and the paper filter is primed and ready for coffee grounds. The one button for set up is still requiring a little practice, but never takes more than a few seconds to get it brewing. Now, if I only could have remembered to set the time “back” instead of forward....but that’s not OXO’s fault! By the way, the packaging was excellent and arrived in my rural out of state location in just a few days. Sadly, my brewers (plural) from Amazon arrived a week later than advertised, wrong model (twice) and boxes flimsy, squished and torn open! Still waiting for grinder order from A. If it cancels I will get it from SCG. Sorry I didn’t shop here sooner. Gail brought me here through her excellent demos.

Very pleased

I considered a more expensive brewer, but went with this based on SeattleCoffeeGear's reviews. We can confirm that the coffee tastes great. I worried that the single button would be awkward to use, but it is really easy to use. I especially like the design of the carafe and reservoir. A really nice coffee maker!Michael

Love it!

Looks beautiful, works great. Only complaint is that there was a significant amount of offgassing, which I suppose is unavoidable with a plastic reservoir. Leaving the reservoir open for several days sped up the process. It’d also be great if the reservoir was removable. But all in all, this is a great machine.

Recommended and issues minor

Makes good cup definitely. Using their conical grinder to brew organic dark roast coffee. The carafe is a problem comparing it with other carafes. It does not keep coffee hot long....approximately 15 minutes . If you brew a larger amount of coffee and take some time to drink it...you may have to pour off the brew into something that will keep it hot. I use the old other manufacturer carafe for this. I understand that no hot plate on this steel carafe but this is a weak point of this brewer . I have also heated my carafe before brewing with hot water to help keep the brew hot and still somewhat disappointed. Measuring the water into a fresh carafe ...it does read somewhat close at 190degrees. So I know the water over the grind is very good in the range expected for temperatures. Recommend this just keep in mind the keep the coffe hot is not too long a time. Dripping is also a possible issue if you take off the carafe to get that first cup before brewing complete.

Good coffee, misleading size

No, the pot is not 45 ounces. No, the "cups" are not 5 ounces, they are 4.5. So, like the 8 cup brewers it competes with, a full pot is 40.5 ounces (versus 40). So, it's the same size as it's competitors, really.

Makes good coffee with the added taste of rubber

After lot's of research (SeattleCoffeeGear videos, SCAA tests, reviews elsewhere) I purchased this coffee maker. Two negative points from my research I can confirm 1) small amounts of water leaks from the top of the machine and 2) coffee has a distinct rubber taste. I can tell the machine makes good coffee, but the silicone rubber components that come into contact with the water and coffee impart a taste of rubber. Confirmed via a randomized, double-blind taste test using the same ingredients (freshly roasted and ground high quality coffee, filtered water) prepared in a Hario V60 and this maker.Upside - quick and easy return, excellent customer service at SeattleCoffeGear, including great videos (Thanks Gale!).

Good, for what it is.

I am the only coffee drinker in my household so most cups I make are with some type of pour over system. Because of this, I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to the flavor and depth I get with my morning brew. I began my search for an automatic brewer for those times when we have guests and the pour over is just not practical. I narrowed it down to the OXO and the Technivorm, and ultimately went with the OXO to save a few bucks. This machine is very nice and does brew a really good cup once you dial in your ratio and grind. Guests always rave about how good the coffee is. It is especially good if you enjoy it right after it has brewed. BUT, like all coffee in a carafe, the flavors begin to go south after sitting longer than 10 minutes. Pros: nice design, quiet brewing, consistent temperature, produces a smooth, flavorful cup is you get it fresh after brewing.

OXO 9 cup coffee maker

The simplicity of design and the ease of use makes this machine my all time favorite for non- commercial coffee makes. No extraneous buttons and gadgetry. A simple, well designed and consistent in functionality. I’d make a commercial for it! It’s that good!

Pretty good coffeemaker, but not perfect

We’ve had this OXO in our house for about two years already, so I guess this is a good time to post a review! I have to say that by and large this is a very nice machine. It has a striking presence on our counter, but does have a fairly large footprint and is kind of tall also, so check out the measurements to make sure it will fit. Like the Bonavita brewers, this is one of the few that heats water to 200 degrees or so, the optimal brewing temperature. The build quality seems a notch more solid than the Bonavita. The electric cord is a tad on the short side; we have it on a cart next to a wall, with the outlet down below (about 14-16” above the floor, and it reaches with about 6 extra inches to spare, so I have to be careful if I move the cart at all.The one problem we had occurred out of the blue about 10 months after we started using it. All of a sudden, our coffee seemed contaminated with a burnt, rubbery taste. This persisted for several days, so I called Oxo customer service. They actually have great customer service and the woman I spoke with said she thought the black silicon hose connector that carries water from the top of the water tank spout over to the brew basket might need replacing.I popped off the connector- a piece about 4 inches long- and sniffed it. It smelled awful! Anyway, she mailed me a free replacement hose, as well as one of the plastic discs that disseminate water in the brew basket. The coffee instantly tasted fine again, and has remained fine over the past 14 or 16 months. I don’t know why the hose get grungy, since we use nice filtered well water, but at least the problem hasn’t occurred again.Like any coffee maker, you’ll want to clean this regularly. The Oxo prompts you to rescale it every few months.

Great coffee maker!

I enjoy the coffee it makes, much smoother than my prior coffee maker. I chose this over the Bonavita because of its electronics, and seem to be a bit more stylish.

great coffee but

Great flavor, easy to use and I would love it if I drank my coffee within one hour as that is how long the carafe keeps it warm. I need my coffee hot after two hours

Consistently great coffee!

After beginning research and deciding to seek my first-time purchase of an SCAA-certified coffee maker, I came across Seattle Coffee Gear's reviews and Gail helped to convince me that the Oxo On 9 was my choice. It also convinced me to purchase from Seattle Coffee Gear, a real bricks and mortar store (even though I live in the Midwest), and their service has been great. The Oxo On 9 has been consistently quick, simple and easy to use. It is very quiet and makes perfectly-hot, excellent brews. The glass water reservoir makes measurements easy, and guests are entertained to watch the pulsed-brewing process! The carafe pours nicely and keeps the contents hot for at least as long as advertised. Cleaning the whole unit is very easy, although you may have to look twice at the shower head to notice the imprinted "lock/twist to unlock" symbol (which has worked perfectly). The appearance of the brewer is very attractive, and it is well-constructed (even the cord)- there are no loose fittings or flimsy plastic parts. I sometimes pre-warm the carafe with hot water, but usually we drink everything before it has any chance to cool, so this may not be necessary. When brewing larger volumes you should be aware that even though the 'countdown' timer has started, some of the brew may still be moving through the cone into the carafe. I've had no real issues with dripping. Being groggy without coffee yet in the mornings, I have also come to appreciate (more than once) that this was designed with a symbol that glows red and it will not allow you to start brewing if the carafe is not in place. I have now used the brewer at least daily for 3+ months with no regrets. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Great coffee, every day!

This is my first purchase of an SCAA-certified coffee maker. After reading a number a reviews and watching videos, it was Gail's video on Seattle Coffee Gear that helped persuade me to purchase this machine (and to get it from a bricks and mortar store). I've had the Oxo On Barista Brain 9-cup brewer for almost 3 months, use it at least once daily, and I have no regrets about the purchase. The Oxo 9 consistently makes great coffee. The carafe pours nicely and keeps the coffee hot. I've not experienced any issues with dripping. The machine is beautifully and sturdily designed. Brewing is very quiet. The glass water reservoir makes measurements extremely easy, plus it is entertaining for guests to watch the pulsed brewing process. Cleaning the coffee maker is quick and easy (e.g., look for the imprinted lock symbol on the shower head to easily twist it off or on). Overall, I'm very happy with the Oxo, it is quick and convenient for making great coffee every day, and I would recommend it to others.

Close to perfection

I had almost given up on home drip Brewers until I found the Oxo. My previous brewer (Bonavita BV1800) would occasionally overflow the brew basket, which would be 15 minutes of cleanup. The last time it happened I unplugged the thing and started using a French Press which I did for the past year. But I was getting sick of making 2 presses on some mornings, I really just wanted automatic coffee. The Oxo is very intelligently designed. The carafe is sturdy, the spout pours well. The brew through lid is simple and easy to clean. I love the clearly marked water reservoir. Access to the shower head etc is fantastic. The shower head cover is removable and simple to clean. A pain point on the Bonavita was trying to clean the shower head which would always be covered in grounds, When brewing the unit is very quiet. Beautiful design, easy to program, great cup of drip coffee.

Winner OXO Brain

Most importantly, this coffee maker makes great coffee. I've used technivorm moccamasters and a bonavita and I think they all make great coffee equally well. This OXO machine is well made. Nothing about the design is fussy. The carafe is very well made and never dribbles. All of it is very simple to clean. Despite only having one button, there are several features of the display including: a clock with timer so you can set it the night before; a 2-4 cup or 5-9 cup setting; and the display turns red if the carafe is not properly in place. If you are a purist you may never set the timer the night before, but it is useful in my house. The design is very attractive. It looks great, which is a bonus because I did not consider this when deciding on which maker to purchase.I would not shell out the extra $ for the technivorm moccamaster because I do not think the coffee is any better. This model is the way to go.

How tall is this brewer with the water lid open?

Nancy B.

16.5 inches

John R.

the. lid open is about 2 inches higher

MATTHEW Z.

Once you flip the lid open the tallest point is 17”. But you need 22” of clearance to open the lid. Hope that helps.

I ran an initial water only through the OXO after washing all parts, then brewed coffee the next morning. It tasted overwhelming of plastic. I've read to run vinegar/water solution and possibly baking soda/warm water through it. Has anyone had trouble with plasticy taste? Did it resolve?

Michael S.

I ran a cycle of water only once through mine when new, no strange taste at all.

Steve D.

Do not recall having a plastic taste on my initial coffee brew. I may have run a couple brew cycles of water only prior to brewing coffee. Believe I also washed the coffee basket prior to use. I have used vinegar/water solution to descale. Will have to run 2-3 cycles of water to remove any vinegar taste. Been using my coffee maker for 7-8 months.

Thomas G.

Have not had an issue with plastic taste. I use only filtered water, so if you are using water straight from the tap, that may have something to do with the taste.
