Frequently Asked Questions

Who installs the PID on the Rancilio Silvia PID?

Our technicians install the PID at Seattle Coffee Gear, adding a solid-state relay, PID controller, programmable pre-infusion and a shot timer. Factory and SCG-installed PIDs remain eligible for our return policy.

What's included with the Silvia PID?

A portafilter, single and double baskets, a backflush insert, a tamper and a scoop. A milk pitcher, knock box and WDT tool aren't included.

Is the Silvia PID a good first espresso machine?

Yes, if you're ready to learn. Pre-infusion and PID control make it more forgiving than the standard Silvia. We bundle it with the Eureka Mignon Silenzio 55 grinder.

What's the warranty?

1 year from Seattle Coffee Gear.

Customers praised the PID temperature control for improved heat management and shot quality, with shoppers "pulling good shots by day two." The build quality received mixed reviews - some found it "solid" and "worth the money," while others noted flimsy covers and instability after consecutive pulls. One customer experienced a faulty heating element requiring return.

  • With the PID it's a different machine. I was pulling good shots by day two.
  • Solid. Worth the money

Super stoked with our new espresso machine. It delivers the perfect shot every time, easy to adjust, looks great on our counter and short learning curve. Highly suggest adding the PID feature.

Well... I gave it a shot. Two, actually.

I forgot to mention in the video that I've been making home espresso since 1993. I'm not a novice or a newbie. Full review in the video.

Excellent!

I've had two ECM machines that I was never crazy about and an inexpensive gaggia that got the job done. This machine's reputation is well deserved. It is quiet, attractive, and very consistent. The water flow/pump is so controlled and even. I didn't really like the double shot basket that came with it but I had a few extra baskets and swapped it out. As far as the small drip tray....there are some advantages to that as well. It keeps things light when emptying. I just use a small glass tumbler to catch water under the portafilter when I'm flushing rather than let it run into the drip tray. I'd say I prefer the tray over heavy big trays like the one in my ECM. I'm very happy with this machine!

Great little machine with lots of features for a great price

What a great little Espresso Machine, Built with quality and long lasting service in mind. Heats up in under 3 minutes, but would let it go for 15+ Min to get the whole machine heated up. Added a bottomless filter. Love the PID and seems like a new wiring format was used so the espresso pour switch is used giving you the ability to use the PID or to manually flip the water switch pushing water through the portafilter. Nice added feature when making different drink and not taking the time to setup the PID. Love the PID shuts the pour off after the timer count down. Drip tray could be redesigned, but nothing I can't deal with. Pours great even shots and very simple to use. Added a water filter to the tank to reduce water hardness. Have been so excited to get this and replace the Consumer great product I had before. Paired it with a Baratza 270 for now.

Great Espresso

This is my first espresso machine, so I was expecting to have a steep learning curve before I could do good espresso with this machine. It took me more than a dozen tries playing with different grinds, pressure, but when I started to get it right, I was getting professional quality espresso shots. I recommend the Silvia to anyone, just know it will take time to learn.

Miss Silvia in black with PID Woth every penny.

I love this machine; the steam is more powerful than I thought (she gave me a warning when I purged the steam into a frothing pitcher) and the extractions are very smooth. All in all a great investment. Thanks SCG staff!!!!

Temperature Control!

I will dispense with the usual superlatives about build quality and what great drinks this machine can produce -- this is my second Silvia. First one lasted over twenty years. The thing I didn't fully appreciate was the world of different blends that are now available when you can actually set the brew temperature. Guessing my way through "temperature surfing" really locked me in to one or two blends. With this level of control, I am now venturing off into the wide world of coffee blends. This is fun!My only niggle is that the drip tray cover isn't quite square and vibrates when pulling the shot and has the demitasse making quite a racket.

Works great. The PID enhancement from Seattle Coffee Gear made it better than the factory shipped edition with a PID. As explained by the very helpful person in sales, Alex, the machine is 'not forgiving,' and I have to adjust the grind of the beans based on the type I have ordered, to get the right strength of the espresso.

I was told that there would be instructions about how to descale this machine *at home*, without sending it in for servicing, included in the shipment. However, I found no such instructions. I will reach out to the Support folks or perhaps Alex in sales to inquire about the instructions.

I owned one of these machines years ago but didn't like it that much because you had little control of the heat. now with the pid it's a different machine. I was pulling good shots by day two.

Look hard at other options - quality (at least in my sample) is not there

I splurged and bought this machine in June 2025 because I thought my family would enjoy the espresso. I bought this one because I have 2 friends who have gotten decades of heavy use out of their Silvias with minimal issues, so I thought it would be of quality and feature longevity. Mine is a total dog by comparison, I don't know if Rancilio's quality has just declined or mine is a lemon, but here is a capsule summary of my experience:The good:When it is working it makes pretty good espressoThe bad:One week out of manufacturer 1-year warranty it won't turn on/heat up without tripping the GFI switch on the outlet it is plugged into. This is after 1 year of moderate use, many days go by with no use at all, typically 2-3 shots a day when it is used. Seattle Coffee Gear says send it in for work - between shipping and insurance, it was $170 to ship this thing back for what seems clearly to be a manufacturer/quality issue. One of my friends self-installed a PID 15 or so years ago and his gets up to over-200 degrees in about a minute. Mine takes many minutes to get anywhere close to that temp, an annoyance. Not sure if this is a PID issue or whatever, but there it is.The basket fails to make a solid seal with the machine, dripping water out of random parts of the supposedly sealed basket when pulling shots. The feet are cheesily glued to the chassis so they fall off if you move the machine around at all, ridiculous on a $1200 machine. So, it gets 2 stars because it makes pretty good shots, I'd really give it 1.5 if the star thing let you do that because of the seemingly bad build quality. Look at something else hard before you buy one of these.

Great machine with some minor reservations.

Perhaps I'm being unfair giving just 4 stars but I bought this for a seasonal home as it just seemed a bit of overkill to spend the extra money for another Lelit Bianca which I adore in my primary residence. The comparisons are inevitable once you're used to another machine particularly one with a pressure gauge that simplifies dialing in your grind setting. The Rancilio is a very powerful machine and I find the single boiler only a minor nuisance once you develop a routine, no problem (or deduction) for that, which was understood, when I purchased the machine and the PID is a really nice addition. My only complaints with the machine are the obtrusive nut on the shower screen which can complicate attaching the group head (seriously what's up with that?) and secondly the steam wand with the single large nozzle has (unlike the Lelit) turned steaming milk into a messier and more challenging operation. I'm finally getting the hang of it but there's still a bit more cleanup afterwards than I'd like. Is this a good machine? Heck yes and the price is certainly right (compared to dropping 3K on a Lelit). I get why it has a devoted following but there is a bit of a learning curve here which I wasn't expecting.

challenging

it's been a real pain to be honest! Many days we are tempted to pull our old SAECO out. I'd say the first 100 espressos were sour or bitter, we've read dozens of tips, watched dozens of videos, bought a few extra tools ? it is a challenge we are now committed to. ;-) Finally can get decent ristretto shots. We found the PID operating instructions from Seattle coffee beyond inadequate for making the jump from a simpler espresso machine. We did call you and that helped a bit. Consider adding a step by step for dialing in the machine.

First Machine

This is my first espresso machine. I chose it because it is fairly compact but has quite a few features with simple construction and standardized parts. It definitely makes espresso and is easy to clean. It should last forever. My gripes:While it's great for counter space, it is fairly annoying to fit a full sized milk pitcher under the steam wand. I had to get a smaller one.The buttons are VERY confusing at first, you have to use a combination of switches instead of just one for each function, but you get used to it.The steam wand knob feels very cheap compared to every other part on the machine. The PID controller is clearly a tack-on so maybe it's not fair to criticize it, but navigating the settings on it is pretty silly. It does the job I need, which is temperature regulation, but adjusting it is cumbersome so I leave the brew timer fixed at 30 seconds. If I had a scale, I probably wouldn't use the PID controller for timed shots.

Upgraded Silva fan

When my 17 year old Silva retired, it was a no brainer to replace with the same. The only decision was PID or not. I called an SCG representative and after weighing the differences decided to go with PID. I am so glad I did. Once I zeroed in on the temperature, all shots have been exceptional. The black front was a good choice minimizing the visual impact of the PID display.

Ilya

The machine pulls decent espresso, but unstable after 2 consecutive pulls. I haven’t been able produce espresso with any crema and has been more watery than I’m used to.

The double basket is fairly small and requires more careful preparation compared to larger machines.

The build quality is okay, the first machine arrived slightly damaged even though packing job was good. The covers are kind of flimsy.

The machine itself looks pretty good IMHO.

Perfect upgrade

today was my second time making espresso and I was concerned that it was leaking water from the back of the machine BUT I discovered that during the initial setting up the boiler I did not remove the plastic film from the drip tray as water fell from the grouphead, this machine is an awesome upgrade to my coffee game.

Silvia....I love you!

It is a great machine. This is the 2nd one. The first lasted 9 years before the pump wore out. I am rebuilding the old one so I have a backup that I might need in ten years! That's 10,950 cups of coffee before I need the backup machine.
