Espresso Machines With Adjustable Brew Temperature

FAQs
Adjustable brew temperature lets you change the target temperature of the water used to brew espresso. Depending on the machine, you may select a specific temperature or choose from preset levels. Check the machine’s specifications to see which adjustments it offers.
Most espresso machines with adjustable brew temperature use a settings menu, dedicated buttons, or a dial. Follow the owner’s manual to select and save your setting, then allow the machine to reach the new temperature before brewing. Keep your portafilter installed during warm-up so it heats along with the group head.
A PID, or proportional-integral-derivative controller, uses temperature-sensor feedback to regulate the machine’s heater around a target temperature. Not every PID-equipped machine lets you change that target yourself. Look for an explicit adjustable brew temperature feature if you want control over the setting.
Brew temperature refers to the water used for espresso, while steam temperature relates to steam production for milk frothing. Dual-boiler machines use separate boilers for these tasks, though user-adjustable settings vary. Single-boiler machines typically switch between brewing and steaming modes using the same boiler.
The display may show the selected target temperature, a sensor reading, or an estimated brew-water temperature. It does not necessarily show the water temperature directly at the coffee grounds. Check the owner’s manual to understand what the displayed number represents on your machine.
