Great well made value!

I just love this grinder. It didn?t take long to dial in the proper grind for my espresso. Had to pay extra for the polished stainless steel finish but so glad I got this finish. It is easier to keep clean and glistens next to my shiny espresso machine, both a shining spot of importance on my kitchen counter. This sparkle almost hides the extremely well built aspect of this grinder. It is solid, heavy and extremely well built. I look forward to many years of service from this grinder. The order and shipping process provided by Seattle Coffee Gear was seamless, easy and fast. It is easy to recommend this company and grinder to anyone who enjoys good coffee.

Great Grinder for the Pragmatic Not the Perfectionist

The Ascaso iMini has been a nice addition to my home espresso bar. It gets 4 out of 5 stars for me because it performs well enough to make a really great tasting espresso. The flat burrs produce a very uniform grind and the worm drive allows you to really dial in the exact grind. That being said, it is slow, loud, and creates a lot of static in my rather dry climate. It tends to retain 3 or 4 grams of coffee in the chute. Also, shots definitely require a WDT stir to break up the clumps. You can either clean the chute daily or allow your next shot to push the grounds down. Also, I find the most consistency is achoeved by keeping the hopper at least half full. Beans will bounce around the burrs if they have no mass pushing them into the machine creating a more inconsistent grind. This grinder is more ideal for someone who wants to make an excellent cup frequently enough that they don't mind that the grinder holds a few grams of ground coffee. Someone who is fine with seasoning beans in the hopper and isn't so concerned about the noise and the few extra seconds it takes.

Built quality is superb

What I like in a product is for it to work well and last. Mission accomplished in the Ascaso mini. My attraction was the flat burrs. No bells or whistles on this machine. I would have preferred an on-off switch seeing I am using a 9 barista and the basket doesn't fit under the shoot. Also the screw that keeps the cover on over the burrs seems wrong along with the screw for the hopper is even worse but they're not needed really seeing the parts are a tight fit All in all I'm thinking it'll last my lifetime.

Love it!

Having never owned a grinder, this one does the trick! The infinite adjustment range is amazing. The only downside of this one is that location of the dispense button should be up about 10mm so the grounds don’t end all around the basket and counter. The grind is great, consistent and the metal mechanism should be great for a long while. Check out SCG video on this one - Gail is spot on.

Clumping went away with time.

I almost sent it back because of clumping, but after a few dozen 20 gm espresso grinds I'm very happy with this cost-effective machine. It is well constructed and provides a very good custom espresso grind for me. I'm glad I kept it.. I think the machine needs to season with use before it performs exceptionally. well.

Can't use it yet

Initial impression: Instructions are minimal, but it seems to require a very small metric allen wrench to attach the hopper properly, and I haven't been able to fins the right size yet. For $400 they could include a wrench, no? After I'm able to find the right wrench, I'll be able to put it together properly and use it, and then perhaps, will update my review.

Great value

Love it. Total upgrade from my old machine. Love the almost unlimited adjustments. Tuned it and getting really nice tasty shots.

Excellent grinder - and easy solution to its only real downside...

Have had the Ascaso I-Mini Black for quite a few years now, and it is a remarkable grinder for the price! I do agree that it is prone to leaving too much ground coffee in the chute - though that’s something easily (mostly) resolved by clearing the chute immediately after grinding, right into the portafilter, with the jab or two of a chopstick.

The best of its price and size

I own the 1-Mini I1 (polished aluminium) which has flat burrs and we love it. Our son would not stop begging us to get one. Boy, are we glad we did! It is fast (8 second per cup) and we can grind it as we want. Furthermore, no messy cleaning to do. All it needs after using it, is to tilt a bit it so the extra grind coffee can be expelled from the spout.Would I buy it again? Yes, with bells on. But I do not see that day soon as it is good for 600 kilos or pounds of coffee beans.

Great espresso grinder, took a few shots (5-6) before I got Grind correct but it is working perfectly now, little bit clumpy but not bad, only real problem is coffee grounds left in chute. Great bang for your buck if all you need is espresso . Settings are nice and simple

Great grinder but very messy/wastes coffee

This does a great job grinding coffee; with that aspect I am very happy. BUT, I do not like that the only option is to dispense coffee directly into the portafilter. In fact, it tends to spew coffee off to the side a bit such that about 10% of the ground coffee ends up on my counter. This is sufficiently wasteful and vexing that it may be a deal breaker. A better design in this area would make this a top-notch grinder

Will this grinder work for La Pavoni?

Can i use this grinder for 20-30cup of coffee per hour cafe?

Patrick C.

That would be a very heavy load for this grinder! It might be able to handle it, but it would impact its service life considerably, and you may run into some consistency issues at that kind of load.

What is the difference between new Ascaso Mini I-1 and regular I-1? Looks like burrs are the same, same motor... Just a size of the hopper? Thanks

Joshua S.

The I-mini is just that, an I-1 in a smaller form factor! The case of the i-mini is a good 1.5 inches narrower, ~3.5 inches shorter, and ~1.5 inches less deep than the regular i-1. It also has a different portofilter holder style and spout.

How is this machine different from the Rocky, for daily espresso-ground beans? Everyone says the Rocky is built like a tank, and good build quality is important, but I'd rather have something smaller, so I'm wondering about getting the Ascaso instead. Will it measure up?

Joshua S.

I prefer the stepless dial on the I-mini to the stepped adjustment of the Rocky, you can get much closer to ideal grind size this way. That said, the smaller size of the I-mini means it has a slower motor and a smaller bean hopper.Do you plan on using the grinder for anything other than espresso? If so, I'd recommend the Rocky, as its MUCH easier to make big adjustments on than the I-mini.Hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for all the great videos! On Ascaso's site, they show an 'optional' electronic timer for the Mini. Is that something I would be able to get from you if I were to purchase an i1? It seems like a useful addition to me: some doser-like functionality without a doser.

Joshua S.

Unfortunately no! The timer-based option need to be installed at the factory with a slightly different case to accommodate controls. We don't have timed versions available yet.Hope this helps!
