Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Barista Express and the Barista Express Impress?

Both have a built-in conical burr grinder and a 54mm portafilter. The Impress adds assisted tamping (a calibrated 22-lb lever), a dose sensor that learns and tops up your dose automatically, and a 2-year warranty versus 1 year on the Barista Express.

What size portafilter does the Barista Express use?

54mm — the same as the Bambino, Barista Pro and Barista Touch.

Can I adjust brew temperature on the Barista Express?

Yes. A built-in PID holds water at 200°F during extraction, and you can adjust it up or down by 4°F in 2-degree steps.

Does the Barista Express come with a milk pitcher?

Yes. It includes a frothing pitcher, a tamper, a razor dosing tool, a dosing funnel, pressurized and non-pressurized baskets, a cleaning kit and a water filter.

Can the Barista Express make Americanos?

Yes — a dedicated hot water outlet makes Americanos and tea easy.

Can the Barista Express grinder grind for drip coffee?

The built-in grinder is set up for espresso. For drip or pour over, use a separate grinder.

Repurchased because I love it so much

This is my second time ordering this machine (my ex kept the last one). It's perfect for what I want. Great choice for beginning or intermediate coffee lovers.

Overall a fantastic buy!

I am happy with the Breville Barista Express. There are some cons to the unit, and in hindsight I may have spent more for a unit with a boiler instead of a thermocoil, but I am still happy with my purchase.Pros: The unit heats quickly and after getting the grind dialed and my tamping technique down pulls delicious shots consistently. It is very easy to clean and maintain, and a lot of thought went into the design of the unit.Cons: The steaming is the weakest point of the unit as it takes a bit of time to get to temp and build up steam. The steam generated is not very dry and it is finicky about generating good foamy milk. Considering the price, I purchased the unit on sale, it is totally worth the money spent. If it were regular priced, I would have went with a unit that had a boiler. That said it is worth it, especially with the extra year warranty from Seattle Coffee Gear.

Breville Express

We enjoyed our Breville Touch at home so much that we bought the Breville Express for our motorhome. Now, we enjoy the full range of express drinks everyday!! I think we may like the Express unit the best - but the Touch is difficult to out perform!! We like decaf after breakfast - wish the ability to switch between beans was easier - but what's the hurry?

My Breville Barista Express

I love my new BBE - there?s been a learning curve but it?s a hobby and learning and getting better at pulling shots and creating drinks are part of the enjoyment. Made like a tank and very attractive in my kitchen. Highly recommended

Worth it!

I'm in love. I was so on the fence about spending the money on this machine, but its fantastic. It is easy to use and the video provided was a big help to get me started. I'm not an expert, but with less than a month in I'm making a great cup of coffee and have even tried to make an iced coffee too.

Best decision!

I have been looking at this particular espresso machine for a while, now it’s time. It just arrives yesterday and I tried making the coffee! It’s perfection! Easy to set up, very well made and sturdy. Water heated up fast and remained hot. At this reasonable price, I’m super happy. Also with the gift card that come with this purchase, I got myself a knock box, nice shot glasses and jumping frog coffee (so good)! Now My apartment will always smell like coffee ??

I love this machine

I've owned 3 super automatics and 3 semiautomatic machines. This one blows them all away. It took just 4 shots to dial things in to produce an amazing cappuccino. I absolutely love this machine!

Love it, as a complete espresso beginner I was able to pull off a decent espresso after a few trial and errors on grinding. Very easy to get started. Delivery was also faster than expected!

Seattle coffee gear was very helpful in selecting this product. Only used it a couple of times but so far so good!

Good machine; wish it were sturdier.

I like this machine. The only downside is that I thought it should have lasted longer. It lasted 4 years and then needed significant work such that the repair estimate came to within $150 of a new machine, so I just got a new machine. It comes with a one year warranty and I purchased 3 years of extended warranty on top of that. Makes excellent coffee.

Great machine and quick shipping

A great machine for a beginner who wants to make some espresso at home. We are trying to move away from Nespresso and this machine is a good move. The buttons are self explanatory, and the set up guide made it easy to figure out settings for the very first shot. Shipping from the store was very fast and I got my machine in 48 hours! Very happy with this purchase.

Good machine but could be great

Overall a great machine but could use some upgrades. Have used this machine extensively and here are my thoughts. 1) the water reservoir is too small we are constantly filling it. 2) The coffee grinder capacity is too small. 3) it does not have a time out feature and will stay on until turned off. Also the 54 mm coffee holder is not the industry standard 58 mm is. With the 54 mm you can't buy any upgrades on accessories such as tampers. Things done well include the ability to really dial in the grind size and the amount dispensed. Good machine just needs to have a deluxe version to make it great.

So far mine has lasted 7 years with daily use

Can't fault it one bit. Purchased as a refurbished model nearly 7 years ago. Still working as new and pulling 3-4 double shots daily plus steaming milk. The only thing I do is the auto clean when the light turns on about every month or so. I shop around every year or so shopping to get an idea on what I'll buy once mine dies but it just keeps going. Only side note is that setting the grinder correctly takes a bit of practice. Mine took setting the internal burr to its lowest setting to get my grinds as they should be. Other than that just watch a few YouTube videos on it and you're good to go.

Not instant gratification

This machine takes some time and adjusting to get a decent shot. This isn't our first espresso machine. We used a Capresso for several years and were statisfied with it. We bought the Breville because the other machine was getting tired. Since we are not newbies, we thought that this would work straight outta the box for us. Not so. The pressure needle was not budging. We thought the machine was defective. After watching several videos, we learned that messing with gring adjustments is necessary (both internal and external). We wasted a lot of coffee beans in the precess. Also have to vacuum out coffee beans before being able to adjust the internal setting. A lot of waste. But we finally have the settings decent now and the espresso is good. Moral of this story - don't expect instant gratification.

Excellent espresso machine!

I am so glad I've got this machine. I watched YouTube and researched prior. So by the time I've got a machine, I knew how to operate and make a good espresso. It is expensive but I am hoping it will last long time. Also when you purchase from Seattle Coffee gear, it comes with 2 years warranty.

Expresso Machine

I bought this as a gift for my Special Grand-Daughter. It is still in the box, this is why I gave it 4 stars. Also bought it for her new home, I bought for her. She has not moved in yet. I bought it for the Beauty. It seems to have all the functions one would need. I don't drink coffee so I can't say.

Even the coffee snobs in my house have raved about the quality this thing puts out. I love it!

Worth it! If you?re on the fence, get it!

We love our new espresso machine! This is my partner?s second time owning one of these, and we didn?t even look into other machines. It took about two weeks to dial in all the adjustments to our liking and break the pump in, but it is running flawlessly now. We?re looking forward to the years to come of great espresso! Would highly recommend making this purchase if you?re on the fence, it?s worth every penny.

1st machine breville express

Great machine, love the savings of not going to the big chains for great tasting espresso. I also love being in control of temperature and consistency of my morning brew. Machine does it all only negative is it is a little louder then expected.
