I would give anyone interested in a grinder to be used for pour over, drip, French press prepared coffee encouragement to consider this option. The grind is uniform at all but the coarse end of the setting scale. The grinding by weight feature which this machine offers makes single cup brewing a breeze. I don’t think it would be a good choice for espresso, but for anything else it excels.
The pros to this coffee grinder are it's grind quality and it's features rich adjustments. It also uses both weight and time measurements . The only reason I give this 4 instead of 5 stars is the major flaw on this coffee grinder is it's screen. I've owned this unit now for over 6 years and I've traded it in once because the screen failed and as soon as I got the new screen was only a year after that and that failed. Some of the presses on the buttons fail to work . Baritza will send you a new screen and it's easy to put in but why at this price point is this happening?
I'm very happy with my Baratza Forte BG. The grind has changed a bit as I've run about 10 lbs. of bean through it. I'm grinding at a finer setting than I did at first to get the best flavors. I like that it's quieter than other grinders I've heard and the sound it does make isn't as harsh. I also bought Baratza's single dose hopper. If you single dose I strongly recommend it. The hopper that comes with the Forte holds a lot of beans and is not at its best when close to empty.
The best coffee grinder. I make coffee in four different ways. The Batatza grinder can give me four different ways to grind coffee and the result is four different ways to taste coffee. It is simply the most versatile and outstanding coffee grinder.
I own the Baratza Forte BG. It uses steal burrs. I drink pour over coffee made with the Kalita Wave. The Baratza keeps the grind very uniform. I especially love the dosage by weight feature. This allows you to always get the exact amount of coffee. I typically weigh my beans in it first, then pour into the top and manually grind to the exact amount. As the dosage is weighed and ground in the same machine the dosage is as I want. If you always use the same beans, you can just pour them in the top and then grid to the desired weight as well. It is very accurate. It also uses very little counter space. I wold also add that although many reviews say the AP is better for espresso, the BG makes a more even grind. As it does get pretty fine, it might really be the better machine for espresso as well. It just depends on how fine you want to go. Highly recommended.
This grinder is really good looking. It is also with a small footprint, perfect for home use. I was thinking about getting a Mazzer mini but am glad that I bought this one instead. It is very convenient to grind by time or by weight, and with fine tuning. The grind is also very consistent and works really well with the Breville 920XL I have at home.
Love this grinder! Have used it for two months and continue to be VERY pleased with its performance. I particularly appreciate the scale -- the perfect way to determine how much to grind.

This grinder does well as a dedicated brew grinder. Grinds precisely, effortlessly and reliably thus far...20 pounds and counting. It's a well built machine, nice touch screen, relatively silently during grinding and bin has remained secured and intact through all grind sessions. Based on current report card, I'd buy another.TPG

I've had several grinders over the years. Nothing beats Baratza! The Vario is a geat grinder. Just like the Vario, it actually brings out the undertones of the coffee. Paired with the Technivorm, and you've got a golden cup of coffee!

Why is the BG more expensive than the AP if it is does less?
The BG essentially is for dialing pour overs. It's more precise, having a narrower range of grind output. We use 4 of them, and couldn't be more happy.
I would look at this grinder as more of a specialty tool. If what you mainly do is pour-over, then it excels at that. I get an extremely uniform grind for Hario V60 or Kalita Wave filters. That said, it can grind pretty finely as well. If you have an espresso machine and you're looking for a grinder to match, I think you could be better served by another Baratza grinder. That said, if your main focus is pour-over, this is it. Look no further
