Bean Switcher

We change to different beans a lot and this grinder retention is close to zero. Easy to dial in the coarseness of the grind. Easy to clean. Only negative is it is noisy.

Pro Level Espresso Shots

I could not be happier with this grinder... especially for the price. Very easy to use and set up was a breeze. The Sette is capable of the fluffiest espresso grind I have ever seen (I worked as a barista a local coffee shop 100 years ago, so I'm sure technology has improved). I haven't played with the lowest grind settings, but I am beyond thrilled with my double espresso shots. I would absolutely buy this again.

Not the same product

This is the second one I have owned, the first lasted 5 years until the motor burned out. This version, while the same, has some obvious improvements over the last one. Namely, this thing is quiet compared to the first one. Additionally, it takes less time to grind the same amount of bean. This may just be comparing brand new burrs to ones that have been used daily for years, but I felt it worth mentioning.

My new grinder

This is the best grinder does what to make a coffee to be made into a cappuccino grind to make those type of drinks. It is also easy to lean once you have done it a few times. Grate starting grinder

Love it

It grinds 40g in just under 10 seconds. The espresso grind is so fine I had to adjust it to something in the middle. I?m not complaining. My Bodum took at least 20 seconds per grind and I always had to tap it to get out residual grinds. Not with the Baratza.

Overall great grinder

Great grinder! I am new to making espresso but wanted to get a grinder that would grow with my journey into the art of espresso making. From what I researched it is more important to have a good grinder than espresso machine and this one has not disappointed. So far this has been great and grinds single doses with little retention and consistent results. Seattle coffee got the grinder out fast.

The grinder to start with for espresso.

The reviews posted by Seattle Coffee Gear were great help in the selection of the Sette 30. I previously had the Baratza that wasn't a true espresso grinder and never got the correct espresso shot. The correct grind has now provided the best shots ever.

High Quality, Good Price, but Loud

On the plus, it’s easy to use and the quality of the grind is excellent. On the downside, it’s a bit loud and it’s hard to know exactly which grind setting you’re on. I also had an older, and smaller Baratza before this one, so I’m finding it a little bulky. All that being said, I’m very happy with it. What problems I do have are pretty minor or easy to get use to. Given the price, I highly recommend it for someone who has past entry level and moved on to enthusiast.

For a first time home espresso machine owner, this grinder is a great value for the quality of product. Customer service was also super helpful, from the pros and cons list to expedient updates on shipping when it was backordered. Would highly recommend!

perfect grinder for espresso

amazing. prior to this, I purchased the best grinder you could get from Bed Bath and Beyond. it was around $100. it jammed up about 1 out of 4 uses. when this happened, you'd have to disassemble, unblock, and re-assemble -- a messy, time-consuming, and wasteful process. This grinder just works. no jamming, consistent grind. Perfect.

Great Grinder

I use this Grinder for Espresso it works Great! I have it set to 14 and a six second grind for a shot on a single boiler machine(Rancillio Silvia).

Quieter than expected

Grinds extremely quickly. Not as high pitched as into reviews said; I think Baratza updated the mechanism to be quieter. The stepped grind setting works fine for my beginner level of espresso.

Happily grinding away....

Amateur here. Espresso fiend with a nothing-fancy espresso maker and a need for drip coffee in the house as well. The grind settings are pretty fine - range is 1-30. 30 makes a very fine drip grind. 15 is the lowest i can set for espresso since any lower seems to be too fine for my espresso machines pump. Pros - great results - precise results, doesnt clog, looks nice. and SCR is great for support!!!Cons - loud, although i gather all good grinders are. I have to grind the nite before so i dont wake up the rest of the family in the AM.To be Determined - reliability. I'm told by SCR that if clean it every 2 weeks i should get years of use. I'm Tired of $50 burr grinders that break in a year!Hoping I will get alot of use out of this machine.

Amazed how good a consumer grinder can be.

Relatively new to the grinder scene- fell in love with the flavors of fresh ground. Suffered for months with a cheapy that spewed grounds and sounded like quarters in a blender, but persisted for that taste, that wonderful taste. Method: moka and aero press. So Father’s Day and Birthday it was time to upgrade. Baratza comes up as the best value (wire cutter). My wife drinks half caff and I’m full octane so minimal retention was a factor. Guess what? Baratza sells their latest and greatest in a cheaper version that has the same burrs, same low retention, just more plastic and no scale. It’s a dream. Fluffy clump free grounds come flowing out in an organized stream. 6-7 seconds for a scoop to be completely ground. I’m not pulling shots so micro adjustment doesn’t apply but this is absolutely perfect for moka and Aeropress.

Great budget grinder

Got this initially to use with a Starbucks Barista machine using a non-pressurized portafilter, rather than my Encore grinder which I now use only for pour over and cold brew. Got good results, but could tell the Barista was now the weak link. Now have a Breville Dual Boiler, and enjoying excellent shots. Even without the micro-adjustment ring, able to extract shots of the proper yield within 25-30 seconds, depending on the bean. Using the same coffee, get very repeatable results. I like that it's fast, but I find it does retain grounds, if not as much as other grinders. Remove the burr after a grind, there's a fair bit more than nothing left inside, sometimes a whole bean still in there that didn't grind. I normally run a few beans through to clear out old grounds when first grind for the day, but that may just be me being silly rather than actually being necessary.Regarding Teresa M.'s comment about changing the grind time setting, is easy to do. After running a grind, just press the up or down arrow to adjust the time shown, then press the start button again which locks it in (you can stop the grind right after doing so if you wish). Mine is set at 5.10 seconds for 18 grams.

I like it

I got exactly what I paid for with this grinder. I grinds very well and they were not kidding when they said it was loud. I like that the holders can still come out and rotate when I need to grind into the container. I was worried I would get stuck between two settings for my espresso and though I wish I could adjust it a little bit, it still works well without much issue. Later I will probably buy the 270 collar that baratza sells which is still all together cheaper than the 270 by itself. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that I will I could permanently adjust the grind time. It doesn't come with buttons for presets but it automatically starts with a 3 second time on it and I wish I could change that.

So what if you don't use it for espresso?

After about a year of using a hand grinder, I decided to buy the Sette 30. I almost bought the Virtuoso since I do mostly manual brewing, but decided for this since I want to try espresso eventually. The design of the grinder is very unique and clever. With its perpendicular motor and "7" shape, you get extremely fast and extremely clean grinding. There is almost no retention inside. Also, there is almost no coffee spilling down into the counter. Yes, it's kinda loud, but I would say its only a tiny bit louder than the Vario. Brewing for Aeropress with the AP burr I stayed around settings 15-27 and got a fantastic flavor. Truly delicious cups. Brewing for V60 and Beehouse was a bit tricky since I was at 31 and still got too many fines, a slow drain, and a bitter cup. I bought the alternative BG burr and this ended up working much better for pour over. While I still had to mess around a bit with my ratios, I found that the BG burr produces a much better profile for V60 and Beehouse, and allowed me to use a few finer settings. The BG burr also works very well for the Aeropress range, but I can't comment on how it works for the espresso range. A great grinder overall, but it's important to really consider what you will be brewing for. It was truly designed and meant for espresso. Finer-grind manual brewers will be fine. Thicker-grind pour-overs like Chemex, Kalita, and auto-drip machines might not work well. French Press will definitely not work. If the Sette 30 fits your needs though, I highly recommend it.

I have an old model and the "arms" pull out so you can reverse them to support the porta-filter. Can this model do that?

Jake B.

Hello!Yes the arms do adjust on this model, you can either have them wider for the coffee container or they adjust lower and inwards in order to support a portafilter.

Will the machine grind coarse enough for regular drip coffee?

J
Joseph C.

I am thinking of getting a Gaggia Classic Pro and I am considering grinders. My choice is based on best quality for my price point (250.00). I am looking at a Breville Smart grinder pro and Baratza Sette 30 AP Espresso Grinder. Which do you recommend?

Danniebelle C.

I have the Baratza Sette 30 and it works great for me. It's perfect for home use and makes good espresso. It's definitely a great entry-level home grinder.

Alex G.

I can not comment on the Breville smart grinder, but I fully recommend teh Baratza Sette 30. The company is wonderful, when ours stopped working, we contacted them & were able to drop it off to their shop in Bellevue, and they fixed it - for FREE! They prefer to fix their grinders & don’t want them to end up in the garbage. Works like new! Great customer service, highly recommend this grinder.

Customer

Hi Joe, I bought the Baratza and let be it! It is easy to use and give a great grind for my pour over. The grind is consistent with each grind. I strongly recommend this grinder.

I have a Breville Duo Temp Pro. Which Baratza Grinder would be best? I have both styles of porto filter (single wall and double wall). Thanks!

Cliff L.

I understand there's no micro adjustment but since all of the adjustment range is on the finer side, are the adjustments fine enough to give you the perfect setting? I have a stepped Macap M4 but sometimes one step is too coarse while the next step is too fine, resulting in, for example, a 20 second pour on one step but then a 32 second pour on the next finer setting. Will I have the same problem with this?

Thomas W.

When it comes to pour rate and overall extraction there are three factors to consider: grind, tamp, and pressure. If you keep everything the same and only change the grind, as you mentioned in your question, and @D.R.N posted, you may not find the perfect setting. I had a similar experience with my La Pavoni Europiccola. An 11 was too fine and 12 was too coarse. I stuck with an 11, but I lightened my tamp, and pulled the shot at a slightly higher pressure. The end result has been a nice, even pour, great crema, and nuanced flavor. This is all to say, this grinder gets fine adjustments, but ultimately, you may need to adjust other factors to get it just right. I haven't used higher end grinders, so I don't know if this holds true for them as well. I know this is a burr, not a flathead grinder, which are steppless, and for that reason give finer results.

Customer

It's about 5 sec per click. My previous grinder was a Preciso (still in use for coffee #2) and I never found the finer steps useful; there's too much variability in tamp, temperature, etc. My coffee is consistently better with the Sette. I suspect it's the quantity of uniform fines in the fluffy grind.

Joseph M.

I get good result with a 9 setting on the Sette, with my SAECO Poemia espresso maker. Granted this is using a pressurised portafilter. I weigh the beans to be ground on an electronic scale with 0.1 gm sensitivity, using 16.0 to 16.1 gm for a double shot. (A scale of just 1.-gm sensitivity was just not accurate enough.)

Donna N.

The step settings go from 31 to 1, with 1 being the finest. The instructions recommend starting on the 11 setting for espresso. I'm using a Rancilio Silvia with dark roast beans. I've only used the 11, 10 and 9 settings. The 11 was definitely too coarse, resulting in the pour being too fast. So for my purposes, the range of settings from 12 to 31 are really not useful. Lately, I've settled on the 9 setting, with not too firm a tamp. The difference between the 11, 10 and 9 settings is certainly not visible in the ground coffee. I have experienced the pour being too fast on 10 and too slow on 9, but not to the extent of the 12 second difference you describe. I suspect that the step differences are probably smaller than your grinder, but maybe not as fine as you would like. (Just for your reference, I don't have experience with any high end grinders. The only other burr grinder I've owned is the Baratza Encore, which, at 12 years old, just didn't cut it when I got the Silvia. Personally, I'm very happy with the Sette, especially considering the price.)
