Key Features

  • Mid-Brew Interrupt: No need to wait for the full pot to finish before grabbing your personal cup. The carafe sensor, located just under the grinds' basket, will automatically close your stream of coffee while the carafe is in use.
  • Gold Standard Temperature: As with all Technivorm brewers, the Grand CDT brews at the optimal temperature range of 196°F - 205°F, a temperature certified by of the ECBC/SCAE/SCAA to create the tastiest flavors.
  • Shower-Head Water Dispersion: Features a 9 hole shower-head which seamlessly overlays heated water across your coffee grounds to produce a balanced and even extraction.
  • Energy Efficient: Coffee is kept warm through insulated thermal carafe rather than electrically charged heating element. Many feel that this also protects against burnt flavors developing in your coffee.
  • Large Reservoir: The thermal Grand features a 60.8 oz max line in the water reservoir, which brews up approximately 56 ounces, recommended for small offices or small families with a strong love of coffee.
  • Simple Operation: Equipped with on/off switch, carafe sensor, and insulated carafe, as well as copper internal components for even heat distribution.

The best unit available-Highly Recommended

We have owned two Technivorm Moccamaster products. We bought the Grand because we both work at home and go through a lot of coffee. Gail pretty much nailed the review so I just want to add my .02. We use paper filters and the downside is that the filters will sometimes collapse. We finally found a work around. A company in Colorado makes a round device aka the Coffee Bullet which prevents collapse of the filter and it only costs 10 bucks. Made in the USA and 10% of sales benefits a charity.Secondly, I will sometimes brew directly into a thermos. The model from Zojirushi (only 1L or 33 fl oz) fits right under the brewing area. The glass thermos will keep the coffee much hotter and longer than the Moccamaster carafe. If I am brewing a full 60 ounces, I will pour our first cups of coffee and transfer the balance into the Zojirushi thermos. I wish Technivorm or someone would release a larger airpot. Third- I have been guilty of forgetting to push in the tongue that will pause the brewer to permit taking a cup before completion of the brewing cycle. A better visual cue could help but my wife ties a little ribbon around it to remind me.Fourth- my 93 year old mother loves her coffee maker because of its simplicity; add water, add coffee, flip switch. No programming, no blinking clock to reset. Just great coffee.Fifth-After sale service. Technivorm has a service center in Portland, Oregon. My Mom's unit stopped working so I shipped the unit to Technivorm with a check for $60 and within a week or so, I received her unit looking good as new and working like the day we bought it.

Disappointing and Dangerous

I am very disappointed with this product. Even after adjusting the grind of the coffee beans the filter basket consistently overflows over the entire counter and into the carafe leaving grounds in the coffee. The last time we brewed it was overflowing and my husband tried to prevent it by grabbing the basket by the handle to take it to the sink and burned his had pretty badly. Needless to say, we are now looking for a new coffee maker after having spent over $300 for a little over a hundred pots of coffee.

Consistantly great coffee every pot

This coffemaker has made a consistant pot of coffee that is rich, full flavored, and never burnt for several years.

Great customer service Seattle Coffee Gear and Technivorm.

First received a CDT Grand that didn't work out of the box. Contacted both Seattle Coffee Gear and Technivorm USA to see whether there was something we were missing in setup. We weren't. SCG sent us an exchange label and a few days later we received a functioning version of the brewer. One of the SCG mavens recommended that we stir the grounds in the basket after the grounds are all wet to get the berry flavors we love from Yrgacheffe. Tried with and without stirring. Stirring definitely improves extraction. Very happy with SCG and Technivorm and hoping for 20 y out of this coffee maker like we had with our Capresso.

Excellent choice!

This machine is fantastic! There's only 2 of us but we finish the pot each day. The coffee produced is similar to any fine pour over. It's a simple and easy to use automatic coffee maker that we hope to have for years to come. We keep the thermal carafe warm by filling with a kettle of hot water each day after we empty the coffee from the carafe. The water in the carafe is always hot the next morning and ready to brew coffee into it. If you need this amount of coffee for your household, I don't think you can find a better machine than the Moccamaster CDT Grand Thermal. The price is high but you get cafe quality coffee every single day which makes this worth it to us! One thing to consider is how tall the unit is and if you have a space to accommodate it.

Learning To Dance with Moccamaster CDT Grand Thermal

The Technivorm Moccamaster CDT Grand Thermal Coffee Maker is a great coffee make and a big step up from my +20 year old Dual Thermal Krups. I am a black coffee, no creme, no sugar drinker so taste is critical. One thing to note however is much more coffee is required to get a proper cup of coffee and due to the higher water temperature light-medium coffees can result in bitter flavor that must be overcome with a bit of salt. I do not love the flat bottom filters but as long as you dampen them filling with coffee they stay in place. The instructions warn against using distilled and reverse osmosis water in brewing due to mineral leaching but do not speak to PH balance water. All-In-All I am really enjoy the coffee produces. I can't wait to secure a bag of medium-dark roast beans to grind, bathe and taste.

Flimsy plastic design especially Outlet Arm/Brew Basket

CDT Grand is flimsy, Outlet Arm will not last long given design of it and Brew Basket. Food Plate does not work at all. Can’t imagine who deigned it. I have just discarded it. Worst of all is Claim by Moccamaster that it offers 5 year Warranty with a Photo of the complete CDT Grand. Exact Warranty Descriptions shows that the Carafe is not covered nor are any Parts in the CDT Grand. That doesn’t leave much to be covered and even that is at the discretion of Moccamaster. Coffee is about as good as my old Bonavita. Only good thing is that it makes a lot of coffee.Would not recommend it.

Very happy

we've been using our Technivorm Moccamaster Grand CDT for a week, and are very happy with it. Left coffee in the carafe for 5 hours and it was very hot after sitting that long, and just as fresh. I would recommend this coffee maker.

Fine coffee but a disappointing experience

Technivorm makes a great cup of coffee and this machine is no different. My issues, however, are with the hardware. Unless you want exactly 60 oz of coffee every time or, conversely, are getting this just to add to your arsenal of coffee equipment, give this a pass. The single most disappointing feature of this machine is that it doesn't do fractions of pots well. There are no graduations nor does the filter basket have a half-speed drip setting. Basically, unless you're willing to hack the machine, you're stuck with full half-gallon pots every time.Another disappointing feature of the setup is the handle on the pot. Undersized, it makes for an unpleasant serving experience.

Worth every penny!

This machine might be a little expensive but it's worth every penny. It brews coffee perfectly. From start to finish it brews the coffee in about 8 minutes, which is quite quick. We love our machine. And dealing with Seattle Coffee Gear was another plus. Friendly service and we received our order within 1 day. Awesome!

Great Drip Coffee_Pricey but worth it!

Just brewed my first pot of coffee in the Technivorm Moccamaster Grand CDT. Purchased the "Grand" because the 4 1/2 (European size) cup measurement meant the smaller version would not be adequate for entertaining. This brews 1.8 liters which is roughly 60 ounces of coffee--so it is not as big as you would think --especially when you look at the size of the carafe. While it may be on the pricey side for a "drip" coffee maker the quality of the output is worth it in my humble opinion.Used good quality dark roast coffee 100 grams ground on my Baratza Precisio at 14F setting (based on their recommendation) and 8 minutes later GREAT_and I mean GREAT drip coffee was brewed. I did preheat the carafe (per Seattle Coffee Gears recommendation) with hot water. The coffee was smooth, perfect temp, no bitterness--absolutely tasty. The Thermal carafe is not hot to the touch and keeps the coffee at a nice temp. Prior to this my only "drip" coffee maker was a Cuisinart which made very marginal coffee despite my best efforts and attention to bean quality, grind, measurements etc.. Now, I am happy_I can make a great espresso drinks with my Rancilio Sylvia, a quick cup with the Hario Pour over set-up and finally coffee for more than a couple of people with the Technivorm Moccamaster Grand CDT.

Does the plastic water reservoir hold up as expected?

Can this be used commercially?

Patrick C.

Hi there,We do not recommend this brewer for commercial applications.

I was cleaning the thermal carafe & unscrewed the metal top(the part the screw lid screws into) & I’m wondering if there’s a rubber gasket between the body of the carafe & this metal lid ? It now leaks after every pour.

The recommended filters are different on the grand. Flat versus cone. Is it different than the forty oz? Will the brew basket style effect the coffee quality? It seems all about the cone these days. Thanks!

Edward S.

The grand uses a specific basket - shaped filter which yes, is different than the smaller models which use the standard cone style filters. The larger design is obviously to accommodate a larger amount of coffee grounds (and water), but this should not affect the "quality" of the coffee. BTW, half batches can easily be done with the grand by simply reducing the amount of coffee and water. Again, the quality should not be affected.

So this machine doesn't automatically switch off when the brewing is finished? When I forget to flip the switch, is it going to burn up the machine?

chris h.

your machine should be fine, the heating element will turn off when it is out of water

Michael L.F.

Since the manual says to turn off the brewer once the brewing cycle has finished, we try to do so. However, there have been several times that we have left the brewer power switch on (for hours even) with no harm to the heating element or brewer.

Caren S.

When the coffee finishes brewing, I remove the metal carafe which turns the machine off. Since the insulated carafe keeps the coffee hot, there's no reason to return the carafe to the machine until the next day when you're ready to brew coffee again. Leaving the metal carafe in position on the machine would leave the machine on unless you manually turned it off. Therefore , you can turn the machine off by removing the metal carafe or by flipping the on/off switch to the off position. I have left the carafe in place and the machine on all day and didn't notice any burning or overheating but that's probably not good for the machine and may be hazardous. I would advise you to call the company , here's their number. If you're looking at the model that has a glass carafe with a heating element under it, that's a whole different thing, I don't have that model.

Edward S.

The heating element does switch off on its own as soon as the water reservoir is empty so you won't burn up the machine. Also, the carafe has to be against the machine base engaging a switch in order for it to brew. So while the main power switch has to be turned off manually, the actual heating / brewing turns off automatically. In sum, nothing really happens unless there is water in the reservoir and the carafe is against the the base, and of course the main power switch has to be on.

Brenda M.

Hi there! So you are correct, the machine does NOT automatically turn off. That said, I've left ours on for long periods of time (we run a bed and breakfast) without any problem at all. Everyone who visits comments on the wonderful coffee. We've sent many of our guests home with all the specifics of this terrific coffee maker so they can purchase one of their own.
