Overview

Bringing the best of Baratza's technical prowess to light, the Sette 270Wi combines high-quality steel Etzinger burrs, a redesigned motor mount and Acaia scale-equipped weighted dosing to create a grinder that is easy to dial-in, easier to clean, and easiest to keep full thanks to its bean-saving setup. Baratza's drop-through burrset lines up hopper and burrs right above your portafilter, eliminating excess buildup of grinds while also improving on grind speed over similar chute-based grinder designs. Improvements abound, as the 270Wi also improves on the accuracy and usability of the scale functionality—and opens it to further software updates over bluetooth.

Likely the best grinder you can get for the price.

I purchased this unit along side a Rocket Giotto Type R and am very happy with the grinder. So far I have run about a pound of light roast beans through the burrs and have been impressed with the consistency of what this relatively cheap home espresso grinder can do in terms of consistency. The grind is consistent, very little adjustment is needed, the micro adjuster hasn't lost any friction and stays true to the previously set position, and once the grind is dialed in the shots are excellent.I'm very impressed that a grinder this light is able to do what I ask of it without wanting to wobble or tip over however my review does come with some caveats. This is either a 3.5 or a 5 star grinder depending on how you use it. I purchased this unit on recommendation from the team at Seattle Coffee Gear as it appears that weight based auto dosing is the new standard in the industry, and I've found this to be the case with a business I'm currently help open their newest location as well, however I don't use the weight based dosing functionality of this grinder myself. If you take a look at the picture of my setup you'll see that my bar is set on top of a stainless steel prep table in my home office which has a carpeted floor. Even with the extra weight from the 5 gallon water jug, the carpet and padding allows for enough movement that the scale in the Sette 270wi can't easily measure the weight. All in all not a huge issue for me because my earliest job as a barista was in a competition shop where everything was manually dosed or timed, which frankly I prefer. If this grinder was on a counter that was secured to the floor or the stainless steel prep table was sitting on a slab and leveled, the scale functionality may be exceptional especially for the price, however I find it ultimately unnecessary as I enjoy the process of being in control of every step of my extraction as well as being the sole reason for the good or poor quality of my shots. I manually dose my beans, weigh the grounds prior to puck prep, and have found that as of early use there is very little leftover from previous shots in the burrs. I use the RDT and while possibly placebo I have found that there is very little to nothing left in the grinder between shots. I've noticed a variance of about 0.025g but that is pure estimation as my scale is only accurate to 0.1g.

Niiice!

It's super finicky, but be patient. It's worth the effort of dialing it in.

Best grinder

This grinder is fast, the scale is incredibly accurate, grind adjustment is easy, user interface is simple. Its also loud and messy, just like me!

Great Grinder, Kinda Messy, Needs Included Spacer To Get Perfect Espresso Grind

I use this grinder to pair with my Rancilio Silva Pro X. Out of the box the Sette was easy to get going but as I tried to dial in the espresso grind I couldn't get the grind fine enough. After some reddit research I found that you need to add the include spacer to get it fine enough to pull a perfect shot. The mess this machine makes though is pretty annoying. The coffee come out super fluffy (which is great) so it wants to over flow the portafilter. To curb this mess I turned to the internet once again. I found that someone had deigned and 3D printed a dosing funnel that works really well with the Sette. A normal dosing funnel does not fit due to the portafilter holder arm that comes out from the machine. The 3D printed piece I was able to get made works flawlessly, pretty much zero mess now. They are sold on Etsy but the 3D print files around available on the internet. (search: "Portafilter funnel for Sette 270W(i) coffee grinder")

Excellent Grinder

This is an excellent grinder and exceeded my expectations. I had a Rancillio Rocky which was good but this is much easier to make fine adjustments with and being able to pull accurately weighed dowses each time makes pulling perfect shots routine. A bit noisier than my Rocky but a fantastic grinder. Not sure why you would need to spend more

Excellent quality grinds

Easy setup, accurate dosing, consistent excellent grind. The only drawback we've found is that in very dry environments, some grounds will fly away from the portafilter. Can get a bit messy.

Sette 270WI

It has a very consistent grind. Was quite easy to dial in for my espresso maker.

Fast grinder!

I purchased this because I was not satisfied with the auto tamping feature of the Oracle Touch. This machine is fast and accurate! I replaced the hopper with a single dose hopper. I grind into a dosing cup to keep any stray grinds from messing up the counter. With the dry climate I'm in, I use a small amount of water spray and it keeps the static pretty much non existent.

Works and looks great

I use the grinder on the minimum setting and enjoy my espresso very much so far. The ground coffee is poured exactly in the middle of the basket. No cleanup needed, no coffee misses the basket. Loud, but very quick. Weight-wise, it is usually precise and keeps improving with time.

rethink staff pick for buyers wishing to grind direct to portafilter

I splurged on this grinder in order to have a weight based dose ground directly into my 58mm portafilter. Anything over 10 grams or so spills all over the sides of the portafilter. Aside from making a mess, those grounds aren't being weighed so you end up grinding and wasting a lot of coffee. Attached is a pic at 13 grams...at 18 its much worse! This grinder should be used for container grinding only.

Great grind corral those stray grounds.

Grinder is as advertised. I do have an issue when grinding a dose the last gram or two flies all over the counter and misses the Portafilter. I’ve added a plastic funnel to corral the stray grounds. Design flaw. So far, after a week and 30 shots, great consistent grind size.

So far so good!

We've only had this for a week so far, but it's been great. We're a small coffee roaster who is only open to the public 4 hours a week, we didn't need an expensive grinder for the few drinks we make. Set up was very easy and it grinds perfectly every time. It does absolutely "learn" as it goes. My first grind was off by .9g and now it's seldom off by more than .1g. Still working on the micro settings to dial the drinks in but we love it!

Fast and Furious - Excellent

This machine was my first "real", i.e. not $30 cheap grinder. It is terrific. Very easily adjustable with a separate macro and micro adjustment. I purchased this machine because of its "easy to clean" design (I drink dark roast coffee exclusively) and it's as advertised easy. The grind is super fast which is great. The thing is not quiet, that's for sure, but if I have to be up, why shouldn't everyone?

Excellent product and support.

I had an issue with my grinder, but Seattle Coffee handled it incredibly quickly and made everything right. The grinder is fantastic, and I couldn't be happier-highly recommend both the product and Seattle Coffee!

Upgrading from the Opus Fellow grinder this has been an eye opening experience. This grinder is absolutely incredible in comparison. The grind is way higher quality and I am getting way more consistent shots. There is virtually no mess. As expected it is loud but it grinds insanely fast so I really don’t mind. Absolute A++ couldn’t recommend enough.

Fine tools are a pleasure to use

If I had known I shouldn't do single dose grinds, I might not have bought it (apparently it upsets the memory mechanism for telling the motor when to stop). I didn't know that until I got it home and read the manual. After a while, however, I realized that every dose is a single dose. That's the whole point of a grinder that doses by weight and the reason I chose it instead of the dose-by-time Sette 270.The hopper shut-off is a real convenience for swapping beans. The straight-through design eliminates a long chute and makes it a breeze to clean and to keep clean. It also makes for almost no retention. It grinds 17 grams of beans at an astonishingly fast rate. Yes, it is as noisy as they say, but not for very long. The grind particle consistency seems as good as it gets with conical burrs, and is repeatable across doses. Baratza support isn't as good as it once was, but it's still pretty good. When I contacted them with a question, I could tell they value satisfied customers. My only (minor) complaint is with the portafilter holder. It holds my portafilter nicely, but not with a dosing ring attached. Consequently, 17 grams of fluffy ground beans tends to overflow an 18 gram basket. Either a larger basket (which can create its own problems) or a dosing cup effectively solves the problem.Fine tools are a pleasure to use and all said, I'm quite pleased with my Sette 270Wi.

Design Flaws.... Good until it isnt

Awful. Inconsistent. Scale shorts out. Design flaw that allows coffee to get into the component board.Espresso grind is extemely difficult dailed in. Not much room for fine tuning. Wish I would have saved up for a better machine.

Italian grinder - Stylish, expensive, unreliable

The Baratza Sette 270 coffee grinders are beautiful and flawed and we own both the one that is time-based an the one with the built in weight sensor. Then why such a low rating?- We bought an extra coffee bean hopper to be able to switch between regular and decaf, but a lot of beans remain in the grinder that you have to remove with a spoon, unless you want to grind 2/3rds of an espresso shot into the dump every time.- The coffee bean hopper opens and closes at the bottom via rotating lever on its back. This rotates a plastic cover through the coffee beans which can get stuck. Don't use force at this point, the plastic cover is flimsy and breaks easily and if the broken off piece of plastic goes undetected, your next run will stall the grinder, blow its internal fuse and require you to disassemble the machine and the burr grinder to replace the fuse and remove the plastic that it was trying to chew..- Since the grinder was already out of warranty, I went from the time-based Sette 270 to the weight-based Sette 270Wi. Same experience with the coffee bean hopper, except that we noticed that plastic had broken off.- The 270Wi doesn't want to work all the time. Sometimes it freezes with an error code and doesn't turn off anymore. Sometimes it just doesn't want to turn on. Every time we've been able to bring it back to life by disconnecting it from power for prolonged periods of time. Really unclear what its problem is. Of course this problem only started after being out of warranty.- Since i was able to repair the timer-based Sette 270, we now have two grinder, so switching coffee beans is no longer needed. Unless the 270Wi doesn't want to turn on again...I wouldn't personally buy these grinders again. Not reliable enough for this price point.
