Overview

Get shop-quality espresso in a compact format with the Baratza Vario+ Espresso Grinder. An excellent upgrade from the original Vario, the Vario+ adds enhanced build quality—namely the metal grind chamber and adjustment mechanism from the Baratza Forte—while keeping the compact format and ease of use the Vario became famous for. The Vario+ focuses on flexibility too; an any brew type 54mm flat burr, 3 programmable timed doses, 220 precise grind settings, and dosing for a grounds bin or portafilter both. Other niceties, like a small digital display and grounds chute lighting round out the design for a truly capable do-anything grinder destined for your kitchen.

We are still dialing it in. Support has been very helpful with this process.

This is the second Vario I have purchased. The first is still running strong after 8 years. We winter in Florida and will use the old one in our fifth wheel and use the new one in our home. We are liking the changes with the new version. The porta filter holder, LED light, and the easy change to the grounds catcher. Before we purchased our Vario we went through several $100 grinders. The Vario is durable and does a much better job.

I RARELY give Anything 5 stars. There's always room for improvement of EVERYTHING. I already have a Vario w/ceramic Burrs. Have had it like 12 years. Still works real good. I brew Ristretto, Very Dark Roast. I got the Vario+ because of the minor improvements & Baratza virtually Never Go On Sale. +++ I want a Good grinder for Flax, Buckwheat &&&. That'll be My old Vario grinder.

Terrific grinder and consistent

Terrific grinder. I added the single dose hopper and a scale to weigh my bean which is game changing for pour over and espresso. Grinds are consistent and this tank/workhorse if a machine is consistent and very dependable. Highly recommended with the single dose hopper mod.

Reliable!

This is my third Vario. I love the Barista brand. Once you get the settings the way you want them it performs well. I purchased the funnel which is a great addition-no more grinds on the counter.

Excellent product and service

Had mine for 7 years and finally needed some parts. Excellent customer service and parts sent free. I don't leave 5 star reviews often. Also, has all the adjustability you could want for different brew types (espresso, drip, French press, etc).

Very Inconsistent -i.e. No grinding consistency at all-

I've been a long-time owner of the Baratza Preciso, and decided to "upgrade" to the Vario+. On paper, the Vario+ boasts attractive features such as a digital timer (timer LED's are difficult to read), flat burrs (as opposed to Preciso's conical), and a metallic portafilter (sturdy). It also includes some "nice-to-haves" like LED basket illumination (pretty), a larger bean hopper (practical), and programmability (defined by 3 different timer settings, meh). However, my experience has been -very- disappointing. The most unfortunate aspect of the Vario+ is its inconsistency (good reason why to avoid purchase). Despite its promising features, it proves challenging to achieve the right espresso-grade grind consistently. It requires multiple adjustments, trial and error, and wasted coffee beans to find the optimal setting. Even more frustrating, it doesn't maintain its settings over time. After a few dosages, it starts grinding either coarser or finer and/or more or less quantity -I weigh it- using same timer setting, necessitating frequent readjustments--2 to 4 times per full hopper. I've tried re-calibrating and experimenting with different coffee beans, but the behavior remains the same -and wasting so many beans in the process-. Interestingly, yet inconclusive, I've noticed that the Vario+ loses consistency as the hopper approaches empty --an unexpected quirk. After owning a Vario+ for more than a year and making at least two espresso shots per day I can't find anything to account for the lack of quality in grinding consistency. In my opinion, the Baratza Vario+ is all gimmicks and misses out on its primary function: consistent grinding. I wasted my money ($500+) and likely be looking for a new grinder soon -any suggestions?- or going back to the trusted 10 year old Preciso.

Poor by design

Set it up per instructions, yet, despite my best efforts & those made by Seattle Coffee Gear?s technical assistance (20 minutes on the phone), we could not get it to operate. The problem lies with the micro switch making good contact with the coffee bean housing. We could never make that switch work. Returned it, got the purchase price refunded, then bought another make for a bit less than the Vario. It worked first time with no need to call SCG.

Happy with my espresso

So far satisfied with when grinding espresso. 4 stars because the micro-adjust is loose from a - d, stiff from r - v and overall difficult to feel the micro-adjustment steps. That aside, grind retention is not bad; measured .25g - 1g (18g of beans/single dosing). Can get it to pretty much zero retention on single dosing but it requires rocking the grinder around to help get the last bean or two into the burrs and out the chute. Have not tried grinding for other brew methods yet but for espresso Vario+ is doing well. Found 1 microstep makes a big difference in shot time (5 - 8 sec) with 18g in / 36g out / same flow/temp/pressure for the beans I am using. Yes, I am weighing the ground beans in the portafilter to +/- 0.02g. for consistency.Would I buy this again over the Sette 270? Having never tried the Sette or any >$500 grinder I would say yes. Because I am pulling consistent and most importantly delicious shots.

Precision & Versatility

This machine was the key to unlocking my espresso machine. The A-Z fine grind adjuster helped me dial in various grinds to ensure my espresso pulled at the proper pressure over the 20-30s duration time. My only (minor) complaint is that after many grinds, the right-hand 1-10 adjustment can start to loosen from its fixed position (making the grind courser), but all it takes it checking where the dial is set and adjusting it back to the desired number setting.

This is a great grinder. I can switch from espresso to drip grind easily and the timer is very handy.
